Web Development Jargon Buster
Here is an explanation of the TLAs (Three Letter Acronyms) you will find dotted around the WWW (world wide web).
- SEO - Search Engine Optimisation (or Search Engine Optimization in the US). Also can be used to mean Search Engine Optimizer etc etc. Not to be confused with Senior Executive Officer however!
- WAI - Web Accessibility Initiative. A W3C (see below) project that does all sorts of things including producing standards to make the Web accessible to people with disabilities. More information about the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) can be found here.
- W3C - World Wide Web Consortium. As stated on the W3C website: "The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) develops interoperable technologies (specifications, guidelines, software, and tools) to lead the Web to its full potential." That is, they advise and create standards so that web pages work on different browsers working on different operating systems, for example. - DDA - The Disability Discrimination Act. Aims to protect disabled people from discrimination in all aspects of their life. From a web development point of view, disabled people should be able to use a website and all websites have to provide ways for disabled persons to access the services provided.
