Advice for Small Businesses and Start-Ups
Aunty B's was established late December 2005, so as a small start-up company, we can share some of our knowledge and experience with other start-ups.
This page contains practical advice for small and newly formed businesses, including products and services that you will need and links to the best sources of advice on the web.
- Business Link - Business
Link should be your first point of call if you are considering starting
your own business in the UK. Not only do they have checklists
of things you need to do and a wealth of information in their own right,
they also have links to all the other important sites you might need.
These include:
- Companies House - to register your company and to also make sure that the company name you are considering using isn't already being used by someone else.
- Inland Revenue - 'two things in this life are certain: death and taxes', the Inland Revenue (or H&M Revenue and Customs) deal with the latter of these two things.
- UK Patent Office - advice and
protection regarding (for example) logos, branding and intellectual property
as well as any products you may have designed. Patenting and copywriting.
- Abbey National Business Banking - Free business banking. There are no catches. All the information you need about it is on the Abbey National Business Banking website. It's not suitable for businesses with a very high income, or who process a lot of payments, but for most start-ups this is a very good financial product.
- Federation of Small Businesses (FSB)- Aunty B's hasn't joined the Federation of Small Businesses yet but once we are established, we will register and take advantage of the wealth of professional advice on offer.
Finally, if you're luck enough to live in Devon, Limbtec offer IT services and support for individuals and businesses like yours. These include website hosting, computer upgrades, data recovery, anti-virus protection; in fact everything relating to IT that you need for your new business! (They even turn their hand to web development, but I don't really want to do myself out of a job!!)
